Grades and Registration

As per the Ethiopian education calendar, there are two semesters in one physical year and students are registered in each semester.

A student who qualified Ethiopian leaving certificate examination or passed entrance exam after completing preparatory education can be assigned by the Ministry of Education in different universities of the country to be admitted as first year regular student. The University’s registrar in collaboration with Faculty registrars will under take the registration of students. Senior students to be eligible for registration they are expected to be academically with good standing (promoted status) with SGPA1.75 and above and CPGA 2.00 and above.

First year second semester students and senior students (year two and above) are also allowed for registration with promoted warning status. Promoted with warning status for first year first semester ranges from 1.5 to 1.74, for first year second semester and second year and above students, SGPA 1.50 to 1.74 and CGPA 1.75 to 1.99.

For each course the assigned instructor is responsible for offering courses, giving assignments, mid and final exams and correcting all the assignments and exams. Depending upon the result the student will be given a grade in letter forms (A, B, C, D, F), A implying for best performance and F for failed student.

If for instance a student has a complaint regarding their grade, he/she has the right to appeal to the instructor and if the instructor is convinced he or she can change the grade within three days. If there is no agreement between the two, the student can appeal to the department within fifteen days and the department  will assign two to three instructors to evaluate the exam whether an error was committed or not.

If the student is caught in cheating during exam time, he or she will be punished. The punishment depending on the case ranges from grade F to one year dismissal.

Students can add and drop courses in the event off unavoidable circumstances following the university calendar. The students can withdraw because of academic or personal problem. To resume studies one has to fill the readmission form to be admitted when they resume. As stated above, the registrar office is responsible for registration and checking the clearance of students at the end of each academic year.
